Beware when you need empathy

You might only be fed on pity

It might feel like something to sustain you

But it’s a hollow cell

As empty as the dreams you once held

As cold as the eyes of strangers watching you struggle

As useless as the crutch that no longer bears your weight

Or provides support

Or helps you move in any direction

Least of all forward

Beware the pity they throw carelessly

As easy as looking through you

You can’t accept it

You must throw it back

Because if people can’t throw you love

they aren’t your people

And their pity will suck you down

into a place where you are even colder

than they
